Anyone who grew up in the 80s would remember when wearing a helmet became a hot topic amongst the rat bags in the quadrangle at recess. Should I forgo my spikey gelled mullet for helmet hair? The Peter's ice cream punnet just doesn't cut it when scull hits gutter anymore. Where you lucky enough to get a stackhat? Which colour? Yellow, pink, white or orange? Mine was the stock standard orange which I wore proudly while riding my red BMX with safety flag, spokey dokey's and a slice of cardboard pegged to the back tyre for extra clap.
One of my favourite ad's from the 80s was the 'Bike Right' campaign, surprisingly not on youtube. It featured a pin legged lass riding her beach cruiser in the dark with her reflector badges, flag and safety jacket all flying on to her bike Tron style with the stock standard 80s voiceover man stating the obvious "Wheel, pedal reflectors"ect. The best.
Another great campaign in this series from the RTA was the 'Wear a Helmet' commercial featuring the King of Moomba 2009. Apart from Molly, the colours, the incredible animation, the soundtrack is a particular highlight. Interestingly not an original score for the commercial but a sans lyrical version of 'Sex Symbol' by Flame Fortune and produced by Michael Hutchence.
